Troy DefourTroy Defour

Troy Aaron Defour is an alumni of the challenging, yet rewarding New York University Tisch School of The Arts, Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. Troy's passions for musical libretto and composition began in community musical theatre backstage and onstage.
Troy is the first grant recipient from the Council for American-Canadian Relations for NYU Tisch. Troy was recently awarded the 2022 Highland Opera/Loose Tea Music Theatre New Works Residency. Troy is also a 2021-23 Librettist Fellow at The American Opera Projects of Brooklyn, New York City. Troy recently presented a new short piece, HOMIESEXUAL, at The 2022 New York Fresh Fruit Queer Arts Festival.
He most recently co-directed Miss Vanjie’s True Dating Story for True Dating Stories airing on FUSE TV and CBC Gem. Troy recently assistant directed Johnny G. Lloyd’s birthday birthday birthday at Columbia University School of The Arts 2022 New Plays Festival. Troy Defour also possesses a background in advertising & brand management storytelling as an integrated producer/copywriter working with various traditional and non-traditional platforms to make brands relevant and as practical-useful fixtures in our modern and future society.
Troy Defour writes musical stage and screen work that focuses on the pan-African / West Indian North American experience. Delving into the culture of self and the non-monolith of black communities, Troy's work explores historical relevance to modern times, family relations and augmenting perspective through lyric and story architecture.

Next, Troy Defour will be librettist and composer of a new piece entitled FATHER/SON. An oratorio being workshopped at Highland Opera Studio centering on the beauty of the black father and son relationship. In efforts to dismantle the media's portrayal of the volatile or absent black father, this oratorio is to infuse romance into black family relationships and share the softer side of strength.
